Yale Inks Deal with Under Armour
Yale University athletics and Under Armour, Baltimore, announced a multi-year deal Jan. 11 to make the activewear brand the school’s official athletics outfitter.
Effective July 1, the deal covers all of Yale’s varsity teams — a first for the school, according to Yale Daily News. However, the men’s basketball team, which currently has a deal with Nike until the 2017-18 season, is the only Yale team that will not wear Under Armour next year. Instead, it will honor the remaining term of its Nike contract before switching to Under Armour.
Yale represents Under Armour’s first Ivy League sponsorship, According to several media reports, the deal is for 10 years and is valued at $16 million, but terms were not disclosed.
“I can’t go into detail about what [Under Armour] actually gave us, but I will say it was extremely generous,” says Patrick O’Neill, Yale associate athletics director, marketing and licensing. “A lot of thought was put into it, and I speak for the department in saying that we’re extremely excited to partner with them.”
